Who should the Jacksonville Jaguars target in free agency?

The Jacksonville Jaguars filled some key needs in the NFL Draft, but they still have the opportunity to sign a few more players in free agency to solidify their roster before attempting to return to the AFC Championship game.

A few big names remain in free agency, including Dez Bryant, Colin Kaepernick, and Adrian Peterson, but the Jaguars probably should not sign any of those big names.

Unless they want Kaepernick as their backup quarterback rather than Cody Kessler or Tanner Lee, Jacksonville would likely not want to deal with the additional scrutiny that is associated with signing Kaepernick.

Bryant is a somewhat intriguing option due to his previous productive season, but it is apparent that he is declining in skills and production. Given his decreased performance, bringing Bryant’s big personality to a locker room may be what is causing Jacksonville’s general managers and general managers around the league to hesitate on signing the former star receiver.

As for Peterson, he is an aging running back who has a large personality, which was clear when he argued with the coaching staff early in the year in New Orleans. Though Peterson was productive after being traded to Arizona in the middle of the season, it’s obvious he is declining, and Jacksonville may not want to risk disrupting team chemistry.

Instead of those “big” names, the Jaguars should focus on signing another linebacker. After losing Paul Posluszny to retirement, the Jaguars may have Blair Brown starting at linebacker. Brown may step up and be ready for a starting role, but the Jaguars could sign a veteran to allow Brown to continue to develop, as he is only 23 years old and was a fifth-round pick. Given his age and where he was selected, Brown likely needs more time to become an effective starter at the linebacker position.

A number of linebackers are available in free agency, including Brian Cushing and NaVorro Bowman. Both guys would bring more experience and depth to the linebacker unit for the Jaguars and solidify a Jaguars defense that does not have many weaknesses.

Otherwise, the Jaguars do not have any other major needs beyond linebacker. The Jaguars have set themselves up well for the 2018 season, and they have all the pieces to be a playoff team next season.
